What causes a dragging and bloating sensation in the lower left abdomen?
A feeling of heaviness or distension in the lower left abdomen may be caused by acute enteritis or intestinal spasms, and could also be related to ovarian cysts.
1. Acute Enteritis
Heaviness or distension in the lower left abdomen may result from poor dietary habits that allow large numbers of bacteria or viruses to enter the gastrointestinal tract. This leads to infiltration of pathogens in the intestine, causing edema or damage to the intestinal mucosa, resulting in acute inflammation of the gastrointestinal mucosa. When the inflammation spreads to the colon, it can cause the aforementioned symptoms. It may also be accompanied by symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
2. Intestinal Spasm
This condition could also be due to intestinal spasms. It is usually triggered by consuming excessive greasy, raw, cold, or hard-to-digest foods, or sugary beverages, or by inadequate protection of the abdomen against cold, leading to increased gastrointestinal motility. Additional symptoms may include cold sweats, pallor, diarrhea, and reduced appetite.
3. Ovarian Cyst
The symptoms might also stem from an ovarian cyst, which typically results from hormonal imbalances. The cyst may exert pressure on surrounding organs and tissues, causing the above symptoms. Other possible symptoms include dull lower abdominal pain, soreness in the lower back or sacral area, and painful menstruation.
