How long after taking fructose-lactose oral solution does bowel movement occur?
Lactulose oral solution is commonly referred to as fructose milk oral liquid. The time it takes to have a bowel movement after taking lactulose oral solution depends on the duration of the patient's constipation.
Lactulose oral solution is an osmotic laxative. After entering the colon, lactulose is broken down by intestinal bacteria into lactic acid and acetic acid, which stimulate local intestinal secretion. Clinically, it is primarily used to relieve constipation, increase stool bulk and volume, and promote gastrointestinal motility, thereby accelerating fecal expulsion. For patients with short-term constipation, a bowel movement usually occurs about one hour after taking the medication. However, for those with long-standing constipation where stools have become dry and hardened in the intestine, defecation may be delayed, typically occurring around 12 hours after taking the medication.
It is recommended to drink plenty of water after taking lactulose oral solution to enhance its therapeutic effect. If a patient suffers from chronic constipation, it is advisable to seek timely medical evaluation at a hospital, including colonoscopy, to rule out organic diseases and prevent delays in diagnosis due to inappropriate self-medication.
