How to treat a scraped elbow
Generally, when the skin on the elbow is scraped, it is necessary to disinfect and clean the wound, and use medications as directed by a healthcare provider. If the wound is deep, a tetanus shot should be administered promptly.
1. Disinfection
First, disinfect the affected area of the elbow using iodophor or alcohol swabs. Keep the area clean and cover it with sterile gauze.
2. Wound Cleaning
If there is damaged skin or pus present at the scraped site, the wound can be rinsed with hydrogen peroxide or normal saline to reduce bacterial buildup.
3. Medication Use
After scraping the elbow, anti-inflammatory ointments may be applied under medical guidance, such as mupirocin ointment or erythromycin ointment.
4. Tetanus Vaccination
If the elbow injury involves the dermis and results in a deep, bleeding wound, it is recommended to promptly visit a local disease control center for a tetanus vaccine injection.
Proper local care should be taken for a scraped elbow to minimize external irritation and promote healing.
