What should be done for a three-day-old infant with diarrhea?
Diarrhea usually refers to loose or watery stools. When a three-day-old infant experiences diarrhea, treatment should be tailored according to the specific cause, involving general care measures and medication as needed.
1. General Care
If the infant's diarrhea is caused by abdominal cold due to inadequate warmth, applying a warm towel or hot water bottle for gentle heat敷 on the abdomen may help. Afterwards, massaging the abdomen clockwise around the navel can further improve symptoms. In cases of breast milk-induced diarrhea, in addition to keeping the baby's abdomen warm, the mother should avoid consuming cold or cooling foods. Temporarily switching to a lactose-free formula may also support the recovery of the infant’s intestinal function.
2. Medication
If diarrhea results from intestinal dysfunction, medications such as pepsin compound solution may be used under medical supervision. Probiotic agents that help regulate gut flora, such as Bacillus subtilis bivalent live granules or Bifidobacterium trivalent live powder, are commonly prescribed. For watery stools, oral administration of smectite powder can effectively relieve diarrhea.
