Introduction
Nails becoming hollow as they grow may be caused by fungal infection or trauma. A fungal infection leading to onychomycosis (gray nail) can also produce the aforementioned symptoms. Moreover, onychomycosis is contagious and, if left untreated, may spread to other nails. Calcium plays an essential role in nail formation; therefore, a deficiency in calcium, phosphorus, or other trace elements may also result in nails becoming hollow during growth.

Nails becoming hollow as they grow may be caused by fungal infections, trauma, onychomycosis (gray nail), or deficiencies in trace elements.

1. Fungal Infection

If personal hygiene is neglected, chronic fungal infections of the hands or feet may develop. As the infection gradually involves the nails, it can lead to onychomycosis, causing the nails to become hollow during growth.

2. Trauma

If a heavy object crushes the fingernail or toenail during physical activities, it may result in nail injury and bleeding. As the nail continues to grow, the injured area underneath may become increasingly hollow.

3. Onychomycosis (Gray Nail)

Patients with onychomycosis due to fungal infection may also experience the aforementioned symptoms. Moreover, onychomycosis is contagious; if not treated promptly, it can spread to other nails.

4. Deficiency in Trace Elements

Calcium plays an essential role in nail formation. Therefore, a deficiency in calcium, phosphorus, or other trace elements in the body may also cause nails to become hollow as they grow.
