Introduction
Povidone-iodine: Mechanisms and Benefits 1. Alleviates oral infections, including oral inflammation, periodontitis, and infectious cheilitis. 2. Treats onychomycosis (fungal nail infection), helps prevent further nail thickening, and reduces nail brittleness. 3. Relieves dermatitis—exerts significant inhibitory and fungicidal effects against multiple dermatophytes; in seborrheic dermatitis, it reduces flaky dandruff formation.

Povidone-iodine is an amorphous complex formed by elemental iodine and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). PVP can dissolve and disperse 9%–12% iodine, yielding a purple-black liquid. However, medical-grade povidone-iodine solutions are typically diluted to lower concentrations (1% or less), appearing light brown. So, what are the actions and therapeutic effects of povidone-iodine? The following section addresses this question.

Actions and Therapeutic Effects of Povidone-Iodine

1. Alleviating Oral Infections

Povidone-iodine helps alleviate oral infections. When oral inflammation, periodontitis, or infectious cheilitis occurs, povidone-iodine may be diluted with an appropriate amount of glycerin and then directly applied to the affected area. This application helps prevent infection and promotes rapid resolution of inflammation. This method is also effective in preventing hidradenitis and early-stage furuncles.

2. Managing Onychomycosis (Fungal Nail Infection)

Onychomycosis is a common condition that is notoriously difficult to cure completely. However, povidone-iodine can help alleviate and control its progression. Patients may apply povidone-iodine directly onto the affected nail to prevent further thickening and reduce nail brittleness and fragility. For optimal results, affected nails should be treated two to three times daily.

3. Relieving Dermatitis

Povidone-iodine exhibits excellent anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, effectively inhibiting and eliminating various dermatophytes and other skin fungi. When seborrheic dermatitis occurs, direct topical application of povidone-iodine to the affected area can significantly reduce flaky dandruff. Moreover, for dermatitis caused by fungal infection, povidone-iodine application helps prevent disease progression and accelerates clinical improvement.

Additional Information: Precautions

1. Store in a cool, dry, dark place, tightly sealed to protect from light and moisture.

2. Povidone-iodine is corrosive to certain divalent metals—including copper, aluminum, and steel—and therefore must not be used for disinfecting or soaking metal instruments or equipment made from these materials.

The above outlines the actions and therapeutic effects of povidone-iodine. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
