Does uterine artery ligation affect a second pregnancy?
Uterine artery ligation does not affect the possibility of having a second child, as explained below:
Women can still conceive a second child after undergoing uterine artery ligation. This is because uterine artery ligation is different from tubal ligation. Tubal ligation is a sterilization procedure; once the fallopian tubes are tied, a woman can no longer become pregnant. In contrast, uterine artery ligation involves tying off only blood vessels, so it does not impair a woman's fertility.
Uterine artery ligation is typically performed in cases of postpartum hemorrhage to reduce excessive bleeding. The procedure usually involves ligating only the initial segment of the arteries, while collateral circulation around the area remains intact. Therefore, following surgery, collateral circulation generally restores adequate blood supply to the uterus without adversely affecting its function.
