Is fasting required for the coagulation panel (four-item coagulation test)?
Blood coagulation tests (coagulation panel) generally do not require fasting.
The coagulation panel includes prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), thrombin time (TT), and fibrinogen. These tests are primarily used to evaluate whether a patient's blood clotting function is normal and to screen for potential hematological disorders. The results of these tests are usually unaffected by food intake, meaning eating before the test will not significantly influence the outcomes. Therefore, fasting is typically not required. Although fasting is not necessary, it is still advisable to avoid spicy or irritating foods before the test, as they might potentially affect the results. It is recommended to consume light meals prior to testing. Additionally, certain medications—such as anticoagulants and cephalosporin antibiotics—should be avoided for at least three days before the test to prevent interference with the results.
Before undergoing coagulation testing at a hospital, avoid strenuous exercise and maintain a calm state of mind. Blood should be drawn under resting conditions, as intense physical activity may lead to abnormal test results.
