Should you lie flat or on your side when experiencing ear bleeding?
Whether to lie flat or on one's side when experiencing ear bleeding can be determined based on specific circumstances.
1. Lying on the side
If minor blood vessels inside the ear are damaged, or if the eardrum deep within the ear is injured—causing traumatic perforation of the eardrum and resulting in significant bleeding from the ear canal—prolonged bleeding may lead to excessive blood loss and anemia. In such cases, it is recommended that the patient lie on the affected side. This position helps accumulated blood drain quickly from the ear. Alternatively, a cotton swab may be used to gently clean blood from the ear canal, preventing blood buildup, scab formation, blockage of the external auditory canal, or complications such as external otitis, local infection, hearing loss, or ear fullness.
2. Lying flat
If the bleeding results from aggressive ear cleaning that scratches the skin of the ear, causing minor bleeding, or from external trauma leading to extensive injury of the external auditory canal with damage to the skin and blood vessels, lying on the side is generally not recommended. Instead, the patient should lie flat to avoid putting pressure on the affected ear, which could cause ear pain or worsen bleeding. However, care should be taken to maintain an appropriate head height while lying flat to prevent shock.
