Is wearing a mask beneficial for rhinitis?
Wearing a mask is generally beneficial for rhinitis.
Rhinitis usually occurs when external allergens irritate the nasal mucosa, causing congestion and swelling of the nasal lining, leading to symptoms such as sneezing and runny nose. Masks primarily serve a protective function by filtering impurities from the air. When people with rhinitis wear masks outdoors, they can effectively block allergens such as haze, pollen, and dust mites. Properly wearing a mask reduces the irritation of these allergens on the nasal mucosa, thereby alleviating congestion and swelling of the nasal lining. Especially in poor weather conditions, wearing a mask when going outside can significantly reduce discomfort caused by rhinitis and also help prevent colds.
During episodes of rhinitis, in addition to wearing masks, patients should also use corticosteroid nasal sprays under a doctor's guidance. Commonly used medications include triamcinolone acetonide nasal spray and mometasone furoate nasal spray, which help reduce nasal mucosal congestion and swelling.
