Can metoprolol tartrate tablets lower heart rate?
Metoprolol tartrate tablets generally can reduce heart rate.
Metoprolol tartrate tablets belong to the class of β-adrenergic receptor blockers and are clinically indicated for treating various conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction, hypertension, angina pectoris, arrhythmias, and hyperthyroidism. They may also be used in the treatment of heart failure, but this should be done under the guidance of an experienced physician. After administration of metoprolol tartrate tablets, the effects of catecholamines related to physiological and psychological stress may be diminished, resulting in reduced heart rate, cardiac output, and blood pressure. Therefore, metoprolol tartrate tablets generally lower heart rate. However, excessive use of the drug should be avoided to prevent bradycardia and insufficient blood and oxygen supply to various organs and tissues.
In clinical practice, metoprolol tartrate tablets are contraindicated in patients with sick sinus syndrome, symptomatic bradycardia or hypotension, and severe peripheral vascular disease associated with risk of gangrene, to avoid adverse effects.
