Can you drink alcohol while taking rivaroxaban tablets?
In general, alcohol should be avoided when taking rivaroxaban tablets to prevent interference with recovery.
Rivaroxaban tablets belong to antithrombotic medications and are clinically used in adult patients undergoing elective hip or knee replacement surgery to prevent venous thromboembolism. They are also indicated for the treatment of adult deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and for reducing the risk of recurrent DVT and pulmonary embolism after acute DVT. Alcohol consumption is generally not recommended during rivaroxaban therapy because alcoholic beverages contain significant amounts of ethanol. Once ingested, alcohol can irritate the bloodstream and increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding or prolonged, difficult-to-control bleeding. Additionally, alcohol may interfere with the drug's effectiveness, potentially impairing the patient's recovery.
When using rivaroxaban tablets, the medication is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to any of its excipients, those with obvious active bleeding, or those at significant risk of major hemorrhage due to lesions or underlying medical conditions. It is also contraindicated in patients with coagulation abnormalities and clinically relevant bleeding risks associated with liver disease, as well as in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
