What causes pain in the upper left corner of the eye?
Pain in the upper left corner of the eye may be caused by physiological factors or pathological conditions, such as trauma to the upper left area of the left eye, foreign body in the conjunctiva of the left upper eyelid, or hordeolum (stye) of the left upper eyelid. Appropriate management should be selected based on the specific underlying cause.
1. Physiological Factors
If individuals spend prolonged periods viewing electronic devices such as smartphones or computers, or frequently stay up late, eye strain may result in pain in the upper left corner of the eye. It is recommended to rest the eyes appropriately, use eyes reasonably, and apply warm compresses with a heated towel.
2. Pathological Factors
1. Trauma to the Upper Left Area of the Eye: Injury caused by cuts, blunt contusions, or scratches from fingernails in the upper left region of the eye can lead to localized pain. If the pain is mild and no other symptoms are present, treatment may not be necessary. However, if the wound is large or bleeding is significant, prompt measures such as hemostasis, wound cleaning, and suturing are required. Medications such as cefalexin capsules or amoxicillin capsules may be taken as directed by a physician.
2. Foreign Body in the Conjunctiva of the Left Upper Eyelid: The presence of a foreign object adhering to the cornea or conjunctiva in the upper left corner of the eye typically causes pain due to irritation. As directed by a physician, the eye may be rinsed with normal saline solution, or the foreign body may be removed surgically.
3. Hordeolum of the Left Upper Eyelid: Acute suppurative inflammation of the tarsal glands in the upper left eyelid, often caused by Staphylococcus aureus infection, commonly results in pain in the upper left corner of the eye. Treatment under medical guidance may include using levofloxacin ophthalmic solution or tobramycin ophthalmic solution, or undergoing surgical incision and drainage.
In addition, conditions such as left lacrimal gland inflammation or trichiasis affecting the lateral canthus of the left upper eyelid may also cause pain in the upper left corner of the eye. Medical treatment according to physician advice is recommended.
