What causes swelling of the parotid gland below the ear?
The most likely cause of swelling below the ear in the parotid region is inflammatory conditions, such as parotitis or lymphadenitis, although it could also be due to obstructive parotid enlargement.
1. Parotitis
This condition can be divided into two common types: acute exacerbation of chronic parotitis and epidemic parotitis. Adults are more prone to acute flare-ups of chronic parotitis, while children are more susceptible to epidemic parotitis. It typically occurs when immunity is weakened and infection by viruses or other pathogens takes place. A noticeable lump develops below the earlobe, often accompanied by pain.
2. Lymphadenitis
This is a benign condition, mostly caused by bacterial infections leading to inflammatory disease. It commonly occurs in areas such as the neck, groin, and armpits, presenting symptoms including pain and swollen lymph nodes, and may also cause fever.
3. Obstructive Parotid Enlargement
This mainly results from blockage of the parotid duct, which may be due to factors such as salivary stones within the duct, or excessive and viscous secretions from the parotid gland that become lodged in the duct. Patients with this condition will also experience the aforementioned symptoms.
Besides the causes mentioned above, conditions such as suppurative otitis media, trauma, and neoplastic diseases may also lead to such symptoms. It is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation at a hospital for proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
