Can I open my eyes immediately after applying eye drops?
Generally, you should not open your eyes immediately after applying eye drops.
Eye drops have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which not only help prevent eye infections but also aid in relieving ocular inflammation. Normally, after instilling eye drops, it's recommended to keep the eyes open and slowly move the eyeballs gently. This allows the medication to spread evenly across the eye surface, promoting better absorption and lubrication of the entire eyeball for optimal therapeutic effect. Afterward, close the eyes for approximately 3 minutes. Additionally, some individuals may experience discomfort after using eye drops; in such cases, it's advisable to keep the eyes closed for about 5 minutes before opening them. Certain eye drops may cause irritation and reflex tearing. Opening the eyes immediately after application can intensify discomfort and cause the medication to be washed away by tears, reducing its contact time on the ocular surface and thus diminishing its effectiveness. Therefore, it is recommended to keep the eyes closed for a short period after administering eye drops.
After applying eye drops, you may also gently press on the tear sac area (inner corner of the eye) to prevent the medication from draining through the nasolacrimal duct into the throat, which could cause a bitter taste in the mouth. Patients are advised to follow their healthcare provider's instructions when using eye medications.
