Should a one-and-a-half-year-old child be spanked when disobedient?
It is generally not recommended to physically punish a one-and-a-half-year-old toddler for disobedience, as it may cause psychological trauma. Disobedient behavior in a 1.5-year-old may stem from physiological factors or could be due to pathological reasons.
I. Physiological Factors
Disobedience in a one-and-a-half-year-old may occur if parents often overlook the child's thoughts and feelings, making the child feel unimportant or neglected. This can lead to frustration and gradually develop into defiant, uncooperative behavior. In such cases, parents should make an effort to listen more, actively participate in the child's play and thought processes, and provide greater patience and guidance. Over time, this approach can help improve the child's behavior.
II. Pathological Factors
In some cases, a child's disobedience may be caused by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD commonly manifests as impulsive emotions, poor concentration, defiance, and noncompliance. This condition can significantly impact the child's future life and learning. It is advisable to visit a hospital for evaluation and, under medical guidance, apply appropriate treatment methods. Once the condition is managed, the child's emotional and behavioral symptoms can also improve.
