How to exercise to restore normal muscle function in the thighs and calves after muscle atrophy
Muscle atrophy in the thighs and lower legs can generally be improved through exercises such as ankle pumps, squatting with stand-ups, and straight leg raises.
1. Ankle Pump Exercise
The ankle pump exercise is performed in a supine or seated position with legs extended. Slowly flex the toes upward toward the body and then relax them. This motion stretches the leg muscles and strengthens muscle strength, helping to alleviate symptoms of muscle atrophy.
2. Squatting with Stand-ups
This exercise involves standing upright with feet shoulder-width apart, slowly lowering into a squat, then rising back up, repeating the movement. Regular performance promotes blood circulation in the legs, improves nutrient supply to leg tissues, and supports recovery from muscle atrophy.
3. Straight Leg Raises
Patients with muscle atrophy can also perform straight leg raises. While standing upright, keep one leg on the ground and raise the other leg straight without bending the knee, then lower it back down. Repeat the process on the other side. This exercise stretches and strengthens leg muscles, improving symptoms of muscle atrophy.
In addition, patients with thigh and lower leg muscle atrophy can engage in walking exercises. Bedridden patients may also perform passive exercises with assistance from family members to promote recovery.
