Areca nut is considered a causative factor for oral cancer, primarily because it contains certain chemical components. Additionally, chewing areca nut may mechanically irritate the oral mucosa. Under the combined effects of these chemical substances and physical stimulation, the oral mucosa is prone to hyperplasia and hyperkeratosis, leading to loss of elasticity and eventually triggering malignant transformation.

Generally speaking, eating a few betel nuts will not cause oral cancer. The specific analysis is as follows:

Betel nut is considered one of the risk factors that can trigger oral cancer. This is primarily due to certain chemical components present in betel nuts, which, combined with mechanical irritation caused during chewing, may stimulate the oral mucosa. Under the dual effects of these chemical substances and physical trauma, the oral mucosa may develop epithelial hyperplasia and excessive keratinization, leading to loss of elasticity and eventually increasing the risk of malignant transformation. However, developing oral cancer from betel nut use usually requires a prolonged period. Simply consuming a few betel nuts occasionally is unlikely to cause oral cancer. Nevertheless, individuals are still advised to avoid continued betel nut use to prevent long-term mucosal changes that could lead to cancer and negatively affect overall health.

Oral cancer may cause symptoms such as non-healing mouth ulcers and oral pain. It may also lead to sore throat, loose teeth, and unexplained weight loss. If the disease is detected early and the primary lesion is promptly removed, further invasion into surrounding tissues can be minimized, thereby reducing functional impairment and potentially extending the patient's life.
