Is it normal for a four-month-old baby to wake up several times at night?
A four-month-old baby waking up two to three times at night is determined by the baby's physical condition and feeding habits. If the baby has a consistent internal biological clock, this is generally considered normal.
Newborn babies have small stomachs and may need to wake every one to two hours for feeding. However, as the baby grows, the intervals between feedings gradually become longer. Additionally, due to individual differences in each baby's constitution, some infants may wake four or five times during the night. Both adults and babies experience sleep cycles—typically 40 to 60 minutes for babies and about 90 minutes for adults. Babies usually begin developing their own circadian rhythm around four months of age, allowing them to distinguish between day and night. For babies younger than four months, sleeping continuously for three hours is already considered "sleeping through the night."
If a four-month-old baby wakes six to seven times each night, it may indicate poor sleep quality, possibly suggesting an underlying health issue. If the baby also shows other signs of discomfort or illness, prompt medical evaluation at a hospital is recommended.
