Why does blood pressure increase after sitting for a long time?
Sitting for long periods generally does not cause elevated blood pressure. High blood pressure may be due to unhealthy lifestyle habits, genetic factors, or essential hypertension.
1. Unhealthy Lifestyle
Smoking, staying up late, overeating, and lack of physical activity can all damage endothelial cells, leading to vascular remodeling, arterial stiffening, and increased blood pressure. Patients should modify their lifestyle to promote recovery.
2. Genetics
Inherited genetic factors predispose individuals to hypertension. The age of onset is usually similar to that of other hypertensive family members. However, with faster-paced lifestyles and increased work stress, some patients are developing hypertension at younger ages. Under a doctor's guidance, calcium channel blockers such as nifedipine tablets or verapamil tablets may be used for treatment.
3. Essential Hypertension
If a patient frequently has high blood pressure but no other underlying diseases, essential hypertension should be suspected. The exact cause of essential hypertension remains unclear. Under medical supervision, medications such as hydrochlorothiazide tablets, metoprolol tablets, or captopril tablets may be prescribed for treatment.
Patients are advised to engage in moderate physical activities such as jogging, swimming, or walking, which can improve blood circulation, lower blood pressure, and help prevent obesity.
