How long does internal hordeolum usually take to heal?
Generally, the recovery time for internal hordeolum depends on its severity and may take from one to two weeks.
1. About one week
Internal hordeolum, also known as a stye, is mainly caused by infection of the sebaceous glands at the base of the eyelash follicles or meibomian glands, resulting in a red, painful lump. If symptoms are not particularly severe, patients can usually be treated under a doctor's guidance with antibiotics. Commonly used medications include levofloxacin eye drops and tobramycin eye drops. Recovery generally occurs gradually within about one week.
2. About two weeks
If the internal hordeolum is more severe, presenting with significant swelling of the periorbital soft tissues and a larger lump containing substantial pus, surgical drainage is typically required. The main goals of this procedure are to accelerate healing and reduce local eyelid pain and swelling. In such cases, recovery usually takes about two weeks.
Without timely treatment, internal hordeolum may lead to eyelid abscess and could potentially spread intracranially, posing life-threatening risks in severe cases. However, with prompt intervention, it generally does not affect normal vision or daily activities.
