Is there any way to treat excessive nasal ventilation?
Nasal over-ventilation may be associated with atrophic rhinitis and can be improved through medication, nasal irrigation, surgical intervention, and other treatments.
1. Medication
For nasal over-ventilation caused by atrophic rhinitis, iron and zinc preparations may be used under medical guidance, along with vitamins A, D, and E. These supplements help improve glandular secretion in the nasal cavity and alleviate symptoms of nasal mucosal dryness. Additional local treatments such as compound menthol nasal drops or cod liver oil nasal drops can be used for comprehensive symptom management.
2. Irrigation Therapy
Nasal over-ventilation can also be treated by irrigating the nasal cavity with normal saline at a temperature of approximately 30–40°C, which helps relieve nasal dryness.
3. Surgical Treatment
If drug therapy and nasal irrigation are ineffective, surgery may be considered for nasal over-ventilation due to atrophic rhinitis. Surgical procedures aim to narrow the nasal cavity, reduce airflow, prevent direct air current impact on the inferior turbinate, and minimize drying irritation. This may promote gradual regeneration of the nasal mucosa; however, surgery carries a risk of complications.
