What causes iliotibial band pain?
Iliotibial band pain may result from physiological factors or pathological causes, such as iliotibial band syndrome, unscientific exercise methods, trauma, and others. Appropriate management should be selected based on the specific cause.
1. Physiological Factors
In cyclists or long-distance runners, excessive long-term physical activity and repeated flexion and extension of the knee joint can lead to repetitive friction between the iliotibial band and the lateral femoral epicondyle, which may easily cause iliotibial band pain. It is recommended to rest appropriately and massage the affected area to relieve symptoms.
2. Pathological Factors
1) Iliotibial Band Syndrome
If iliotibial band pain is caused by iliotibial band syndrome, follow medical advice to use medications such as meloxicam tablets or ibuprofen sustained-release tablets to alleviate pain. Surgical options such as bursectomy may also be considered.
2) Unscientific Exercise Methods
Unscientific exercise practices—such as consistently high-intensity workouts or frequent uphill running—can subject the iliotibial band to excessive friction it cannot tolerate, leading to pain. It is recommended to perform appropriate stretching exercises to improve hip abductor muscle flexibility and strengthen local muscles to relieve iliotibial band pain.
3) Trauma
If the leg suffers external impact due to accidental injury, it may result in iliotibial band pain. Rest or immobilization is advised. Follow medical guidance to use eperisone hydrochloride tablets, or consider surgical intervention or microwave therapy if necessary.
Patients with iliotibial band pain should follow their doctor's instructions for regular follow-up examinations during treatment. After surgery, keep the wound clean and dry to prevent infection.
