How is a 24-hour EEG monitoring performed?
EEG 24-hour monitoring involves attaching electrodes to the scalp via lead wires, which are then connected to an EEG machine for continuous 24-hour recording. The specific procedure is as follows:
1. Before undergoing an EEG test, patients should wash their hair thoroughly and remove any oils to ensure better electrode contact with the scalp.
2. Additionally, within 24 to 48 hours prior to the test, patients should avoid consuming foods or medications containing caffeine, antiepileptic drugs, or other substances that may affect test results.
3. Electrode leads are then placed at designated positions on the head and connected to an amplifier to begin the recording.
4. The other end of the electrodes is plugged into a portable recording device, which continuously records the patient's brain activity over a 24-hour period, including during all daily activities.
5. After 24 hours, the patient returns to the hospital, where the doctor removes the EEG recording device and interprets the recorded data.
