1. Warming the Meridians and Stopping Bleeding

Chen Ai is warm in nature and can warm the meridians and dispel cold. After being charred by stir-frying, its hemostatic effect becomes stronger. It can be used to treat hemorrhagic conditions caused by deficiency-cold, such as metrorrhagia, menorrhagia, and other menstrual disorders in women. It is commonly combined with Colla Corii Asini (Ajiao) and Rehmannia (Dihuang), as seen in Jiao Ai Tang (Gelatin-Ai Decoction), to enhance its ability to stop bleeding and regulate menstruation.

2. Eliminating Dampness and Relieving Itching

Chen Ai has the effect of eliminating dampness and relieving itching. When applied externally, it can treat skin conditions such as eczema and pruritus. It is often combined with Ku Shen (Sophora flavescens) and Huang Bai (Phellodendron bark), decocted for external washing, to clear heat, dry dampness, and relieve itching.

3. Dispelling Cold and Relieving Pain

With its pungent, dispersing, and warm properties, Chen Ai effectively dispels cold and alleviates pain. It is commonly used to treat dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, and infertility due to cold uterus caused by deficiency-cold in the lower jiao. It is frequently combined with Xiang Fu (Cyperus) and Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia), as in Ai Fu Nuan Gong Wan (Ai-Fu-Warming Palace Pill), which warms the meridians, dispels cold, and relieves uterine pain.

4. Warming the Stomach and Stopping Vomiting

Chen Ai can warm the stomach, dispel cold, harmonize the middle burner, and reverse upward rebellion. It is indicated for vomiting and hiccups caused by spleen-stomach deficiency-cold. It is commonly used with Ban Xia (Pinellia) and Sheng Jiang (fresh ginger). For example, adding Chen Ai to Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang enhances its efficacy in warming the stomach and stopping vomiting.

5. Stabilizing Pregnancy

Chen Ai helps stabilize pregnancy and is suitable for restlessness of the fetus due to deficiency-cold in the lower jiao and instability of fetal essence. It is often combined with Ajiao (Colla Corii Asini) and Sang Ji Sheng (Loranthus), as in Shou Tai Wan (Longevity Fetus Pill) with added Chen Ai, enhancing the effect of stabilizing the fetus, strengthening fetal qi, and preventing miscarriage.
