Introduction
"Eye bags" refer to swelling, puffiness, darkening, and sagging of the lower eyelid, primarily caused by weakening of the supporting structures of the lower eyelid. With aging, the orbicularis oculi muscle and ligaments become lax, allowing orbital fat to protrude downward and form eye bags. Eye bags generally have a negative aesthetic impact on the face. There are various methods to eliminate them. In daily life, one can consciously close the eyes to exercise the skin around the eyes.

What Is Eye Bag Removal?

There are various methods available for removing eye bags. In daily life, one can consciously close the eyes to exercise the skin around the eyes. Collagen-based eye bag treatments are also available on the market. Collagen can tighten the local skin and alleviate eye bag symptoms to some extent. For more direct results, individuals may opt for surgical eye bag removal at a hospital, although this method generally carries higher risks and may lead to complications such as swelling and bleeding. Laser eye bag removal is another option, which involves less bleeding and allows faster recovery, but it is relatively expensive.

Some patients have hereditary eye bags, mainly due to protruding orbital fat with no skin wrinkles. In such cases, fat can be removed via transconjunctival blepharoplasty to eliminate the appearance of eye bags. Additionally, there is a clear distinction between eye bags and "eye rolls" (or "sleeping worms"). An eye roll results from localized hypertrophy of the orbicularis oculi muscle or subcutaneous fat accumulation, whereas an eye bag is a bulge caused by sagging skin and protruding orbital fat. Excess skin and fat can be surgically removed, and the lax orbicularis oculi muscle can be tightened—this procedure is known as eye bag removal.

For severe eye bags, it is recommended to seek medical treatment at a hospital under professional guidance.
