First Aid Treatment for Hypothermia
First aid for hypothermia should focus on rapidly restoring body temperature and maintaining warmth. Treatment generally includes methods such as rewarming, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and prompt medical transport. Hypothermia typically refers to a condition in which the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, leading to a drop in core body temperature and resulting in symptoms such as shivering, confusion, and cardiovascular and respiratory failure, potentially leading to death. Immediate treatment is essential. For example, to raise body temperature, follow these specific steps:
1. When encountering a person with hypothermia, immediately stop outdoor activities and move the patient to a sheltered, wind-protected area; bring them indoors and close doors and windows.
2. Lay the patient on a bed to prevent further loss of core body temperature.
3. As soon as hypothermia symptoms appear, rescuers should quickly help the patient change into dry clothes, dry their body with towels, keep the patient dry, and wrap them completely in a sleeping bag or thick clothing.
4. Use hot water bottles or chemical heat packs to warm the patient’s core areas such as the neck, armpits, and groin. If possible, build a fire to help gradually restore the patient’s overall body temperature.
