Cough worsened after eating steamed oranges
Eating steamed oranges and experiencing worsened coughing may be due to improper consumption, incorrect indication, allergy, or other factors. If the cause is improper consumption, no special treatment is needed. However, if the worsening is due to incorrect indication or allergy, consumption should be stopped immediately. In severe cases, medical evaluation is necessary for further examination and targeted medication based on the underlying cause.
1. Improper Consumption
Steamed oranges are usually served at a high temperature. If the heat irritates the throat, it may trigger sudden coughing. Additionally, consuming large amounts suddenly can also irritate the throat, leading to temporary coughing or exacerbation of existing cough symptoms. This condition is generally mild and transient, so there's no need for excessive concern. Drinking warm water and resting for a while is usually sufficient.
2. Incorrect Indication
Orange is the fruit of Citrus sinensis, belonging to the Rutaceae family. It has effects such as regulating stomach function, promoting qi circulation, relieving chest tightness, counteracting alcohol intoxication, and detoxifying fish and seafood poisoning. It can help alleviate symptoms like nausea, vomiting, chest discomfort, abdominal distension, and drunkenness. Steamed oranges may relieve cough, particularly those caused by lung heat or stagnation of qi and blood. However, if the cough is due to wind-cold感冒 (common cold with cold pathogen), eating steamed oranges is not recommended, as it may not only fail to relieve symptoms but also worsen the condition. Patients should stop consuming steamed oranges immediately and, under medical guidance, take medications such as Pholcodine oral solution or Dextromethorphan oral solution for treatment.
3. Allergy
Oranges contain abundant nutrients including protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and carotenoids, which help relieve cough, expel phlegm, stimulate appetite, regulate qi flow, and protect blood vessels. If a patient is allergic to oranges or their components, an allergic reaction may occur, leading to aggravated coughing. Under medical supervision, patients may take antiallergic medications such as Cetirizine tablets or Diphenhydramine tablets to alleviate cough symptoms.
