Should you drink hot water or cold water for coughing?
If a patient has a cough, it is recommended to drink warm water, which helps the body recover. Cold water should be avoided as much as possible to prevent worsening of the condition.
Coughing is one of the most common symptoms of respiratory diseases, primarily caused by irritation of the trachea or pleura triggering a cough reflex. Coughs can be classified as acute, chronic, or subacute, and may result from factors such as inhaled substances, infections, food irritants, or changes in climate.
Generally, patients with coughs should drink plenty of warm water. Warm water promotes metabolism, helping the body eliminate viruses more quickly. It also helps dilute respiratory mucus, reduces mucus viscosity, facilitates expectoration, and replenishes fluids lost by the body, thereby supporting recovery. However, drinking cold water is not recommended, as it may be irritating and trigger bronchospasm, potentially worsening cough symptoms and delaying recovery.
It should be noted that coughs may be caused by conditions such as the common cold or bronchitis, which often do not resolve spontaneously. Patients are advised to seek timely medical care. If the cough is due to a cold, medications such as ribavirin granules, amantadine tablets, or Sangju Cold Tablets may be taken under a doctor's guidance. For bronchitis, oral medications such as amoxicillin capsules, cefaclor tablets, or licorice tablets may help relieve discomfort.
