Is coughing with yellow phlegm a sign of pneumonia?
Coughing and producing yellow phlegm may be caused by pneumonia, but since these are common symptoms, they could also result from other conditions.
Pneumonia is a relatively common lung disease that may be caused by various factors such as Gram-negative bacillary infections, fungi, anaerobic bacteria, mixed infections, or increasing prevalence of drug-resistant bacteria.
In general, when patients experience coughing and yellow sputum production, pneumonia should be considered, as typical symptoms of pneumonia include fever, cough, sputum production, hemoptysis (coughing up blood), chest tightness, chest pain, and shortness of breath. If a patient has had a prolonged cough accompanied by bacterial infection, the sputum may become darker in color, leading to yellow phlegm. It is recommended that patients take antibiotic medications such as ampicillin capsules, cefuroxime axetil tablets, or nitrofurantoin tablets under medical supervision.
However, coughing and yellow phlegm are common symptoms that may also be caused by other diseases such as acute pharyngitis or bronchitis. When inflammation occurs in the pharynx and spreads to the larynx, it can locally irritate the respiratory tract, resulting in coughing and yellow sputum, possibly accompanied by symptoms like throat itching or a burning sensation. In such cases, patients may follow medical advice to take medications such as azithromycin tablets or Lanqin oral liquid to relieve discomfort. Bronchitis is another common respiratory infection characterized by cough and yellow sputum. Typically, in the early stages, sputum volume is small, but as the condition progresses, sputum increases and becomes thicker. Patients may take medications such as ambroxol hydrochloride tablets or amoxicillin capsules under a doctor's guidance to alleviate symptoms.
