Can drinking roselle (hibiscus tea) delay menstruation?
Drinking hibiscus tea in moderation has no effect on menstruation; however, excessive consumption may delay the menstrual cycle.
Menstruation is a physiological cyclic process. The regular occurrence of menstruation is an important sign of mature reproductive function and a significant physiological phenomenon in women of reproductive age. It is characterized by periodicity and self-limitation. The interval between the first day of two consecutive menstrual periods is defined as one menstrual cycle, typically lasting 21 to 35 days, with an average of 28 days. Generally, moderate consumption of hibiscus tea does not delay menstruation. However, excessive intake may lead to delayed periods. Hibiscus is sour in taste and cool in nature, affecting the kidney meridian. It has effects such as relieving cough due to lung deficiency, lowering blood pressure, and alleviating alcohol intoxication. Because of its cool nature, hibiscus tea should not be consumed excessively, especially during menstruation. Overconsumption may disrupt menstrual regularity, leading to delayed periods or even amenorrhea.
Women should pay attention to weather changes, dress appropriately to avoid catching a chill, ensure adequate rest to prevent excessive fatigue, engage in moderate exercise, and avoid strenuous physical activity.
