Introduction
The normal range for serum phosphorus in children is typically between 0.74 and 3.9 millimoles per liter (mmol/L). Levels above 3.9 mmol/L indicate hyperphosphatemia, which requires treatment. Elevated blood phosphorus levels in children may result from excessive vitamin D, hypothyroidism, renal insufficiency, or other causes. Additionally, children may sometimes exhibit increased phosphorus levels.

The normal level of blood phosphorus in children is typically between 0.74 and 39 millimoles per liter. Levels exceeding 39 millimoles per liter indicate hyperphosphatemia, which requires treatment. Elevated blood phosphorus in children may be caused by excessive vitamin D, hypothyroidism, renal insufficiency, or other factors.

1. Excessive Vitamin D

Excess vitamin D or vitamin D toxicity in children may lead to increased blood phosphorus levels. Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Under a doctor's guidance, treatments may include budesonide nebulized suspension, dexamethasone tablets, or prednisone acetate tablets.

2. Hypothyroidism

Elevated blood phosphorus is associated with hypothyroidism. In patients with hypothyroidism, reduced urinary excretion of phosphorus can lead to increased blood phosphorus levels. Tests such as thyroid function panel (seven items) are recommended. Once diagnosed with hypothyroidism, treatment under medical supervision may include oral thyroid tablets, levothyroxine sodium tablets, or dried thyroid tablets.

3. Renal Insufficiency

In cases of renal insufficiency, decreased glomerular filtration rate and reduced renal excretion of phosphorus can also cause elevated blood phosphorus in children. It is important to control dietary intake of protein and phosphorus. If significant edema or elevated creatinine levels occur, medications such as Shenshuaining granules, Ureamic Clear granules, or Haikun Shenxi capsules may be used under a doctor’s guidance.

In addition, children with high blood phosphorus should limit their intake of foods high in phosphorus, such as cola, hamburgers, coffee, and animal organs.
