How to assist patients with sputum expectoration
Assist patients in expectorating phlegm through methods such as back tapping, nebulization inhalation, and medication.
1. Back Tapping
The patient can be positioned on their side, and then the areas on both sides of the spine should be gently tapped from bottom to top to help detach mucus from the tracheal wall and promote sputum expulsion.
2. Nebulization Inhalation
Under medical guidance, nebulization inhalation can be used to moisten the mucous membranes of the throat and dilute sputum, thereby facilitating expectoration.
3. Medication
Under medical supervision, expectorant medications such as mucolytics may also be used. These drugs enhance ciliary activity in the nasal mucosa to promote sputum clearance. Commonly used medications include ambroxol hydrochloride tablets, carboxymethylcysteine tablets, and lipinai capsules.
In addition, a mechanical exsufflator (expectorator device) can also be used to assist in sputum removal and support recovery.
