Introduction
Leg pain in elderly individuals over 80 years old may be caused by osteoarthritis, lumbar disc herniation, or rheumatoid diseases. Appropriate treatment should be selected based on the underlying cause, and anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications can help relieve symptoms. Additionally, leg pain in older adults could also result from conditions such as bone metastases; surgical intervention may be considered when necessary.

Leg pain in elderly individuals over the age of 80 may be caused by osteoarthritis, lumbar disc herniation, or rheumatic diseases. Appropriate treatment should be selected based on the underlying cause.

1. Osteoarthritis

In older adults, aging can lead to gradual degeneration of knee joints. Without proper personal protection or in cases of obesity, this degeneration may result in osteoarthritis and subsequent leg pain. Conservative treatments are typically used to reduce localized pain. It is important to balance rest with activity, and anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications may also be used under a doctor’s guidance, such as ibuprofen tablets or indomethacin tablets.

2. Lumbar Disc Herniation

When spinal nerves are compressed due to a herniated disc, it may cause pain in the lower back and legs. Under medical supervision, acupuncture, physical therapy, and other methods can be used to improve symptoms locally.

3. Rheumatic Diseases

Rheumatoid arthritis may cause joint inflammation and localized pain after onset. Following diagnosis, physical therapies such as acupuncture, moxibustion, or heat application may be used under a physician's guidance.

Besides the above causes, leg pain in the elderly could also be due to conditions such as bone metastatic tumors. In necessary cases, surgical treatment may be considered.
