Functions and Effects of Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan
Buzhong Yiqi Wan (Tonify the Spleen and Augment Qi Pills) exerts multiple therapeutic effects, including strengthening the spleen and moistening the intestines, tonifying the middle burner and augmenting qi, clearing heat and detoxifying, uplifting yang and supporting prolapsed organs, and reinforcing qi to control bleeding.

1. Strengthening the Spleen and Moistening the Intestines
Buzhong Yiqi Wan strengthens the spleen and moistens the intestines. Its ingredients—Atractylodes macrocephala (Baizhu) and Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gancao)—help regulate spleen and stomach function, thereby improving symptoms of spleen-stomach deficiency. Additionally, it modulates the urinary and digestive systems and effectively alleviates uterine prolapse, rectal prolapse, and chronic diarrhea.
2. Tonifying the Middle Burner and Augmenting Qi
Buzhong Yiqi Wan tonifies the middle burner and augments qi. Ingredients such as Bupleurum chinense (Chaihu) and Angelica sinensis (Danggui) synergistically nourish both qi and blood. Moreover, it effectively uplifts central qi, enhancing the body’s nonspecific immunity and improving resistance against viruses and bacteria. It may also alleviate arrhythmia and syncope associated with hypotension.
3. Clearing Heat and Detoxifying
Buzhong Yiqi Wan clears heat and detoxifies. Prepared Glycyrrhiza (Zhi Gancao) and Cimicifuga foetida (Shengma) in the formula counteract the toxicity of Aconitum (Fuzi), while Shengma additionally exerts a potent heat-clearing effect. Consequently, the formula effectively clears heat and eliminates toxins. It is clinically indicated for sore throat, toothache, and wind-heat headache.
4. Uplifting Yang and Supporting Prolapsed Organs
Shengma and Chaihu in Buzhong Yiqi Wan uplift yang qi. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), yang qi naturally ascends and moves outward; however, when spleen-stomach qi deficiency leads to yang qi sinking, symptoms such as uterine prolapse, rectal prolapse, and gastric ptosis may occur. By uplifting the sunken yang qi, Buzhong Yiqi Wan helps restore affected organs to their normal anatomical positions.
5. Reinforcing Qi to Control Bleeding
Buzhong Yiqi Wan reinforces qi to control bleeding by tonifying spleen and stomach qi. According to TCM theory, qi governs and contains blood; thus, when spleen qi is deficient, its anchoring function weakens, potentially resulting in chronic bleeding disorders such as hematochezia or metrorrhagia. Administration of Buzhong Yiqi Wan enhances the spleen’s ability to anchor and contain blood, ensuring normal circulation within the vessels and preventing extravasation.
