Introduction
Pain in the lower rib area resembling a side stitch may be related to causes such as rib fractures, intercostal neuralgia, or tumors. Following a rib fracture—especially when there is displacement of the fracture ends—the nerves in the chest wall and the spaces between the ribs are easily irritated, leading to significant pain during coughing or deep breathing. This can also trigger spasms in muscles and nerves, resulting in the sensation of pain in the lower rib region.

Pain below the chest resembling a side stitch may be related to rib fractures, intercostal neuralgia, tumors, or other causes. Each condition requires different treatment approaches, so patients are advised to seek timely medical evaluation and appropriate examinations to determine the exact cause.

1. Rib Fracture

After a rib fracture—especially when there is displacement of the fracture ends—the nerves in the chest wall and the spaces between the ribs are easily irritated. This can lead to significant pain during coughing or deep breathing, and may also trigger muscle spasms and nerve-related discomfort, causing a sensation of pain below the chest similar to a side stitch. In such cases, patients should promptly go to the hospital for treatment, which includes clearing respiratory secretions, pain relief, and stabilizing the chest wall to restore chest function and prevent complications.

2. Intercostal Neuralgia

Patients with intercostal neuralgia often experience nerve pain that follows a semicircular path from the back along the ribs to the front of the chest and abdomen. The severity of pain varies; it may range from a dull ache to severe, intolerable pain. In serious cases, movements such as turning over, laughing loudly, deep breathing, or yawning can provoke pain. Some individuals may feel as though they have a side stitch. Under medical guidance, patients can use anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications such as carbamazepine tablets or gabapentin capsules for treatment.

3. Tumor

Tumors within the ribs—such as bone tumors or tumors originating from internal organs—can create space-occupying lesions, leading to rib pain. In such cases, surgical removal of the tumor is typically required.

Besides the above causes, conditions such as diaphragmatic spasm, pleuritis, and fasciitis may also produce similar symptoms. Patients are therefore advised to seek prompt medical care for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
