Introduction
If mercurochrome (red medicine) and iodophor are accidentally used together on a wound, mercury iodide may form. Use should be stopped immediately, followed by thoroughly rinsing the wound and monitoring any changes. If any discomfort or adverse symptoms occur at the wound site, prompt medical attention is recommended. The merbromin in mercurochrome reacts chemically with the iodine in iodophor to produce mercury iodide, a substance that strongly irritates the skin and mucous membranes; therefore, use must be discontinued immediately.

Using mercurochrome and iodophor on a wound accidentally may produce mercury iodide. You should immediately stop using them, then rinse the wound and monitor any changes. If any discomfort or symptoms occur at the wound site, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.

1. Discontinue use

Mercurochrome contains merbromin, which can react chemically with iodine in iodophor to form mercury iodide. This substance is highly irritating to the skin and mucous membranes and may impair wound healing. Therefore, discontinue use immediately.

2. Rinse the wound

If exposure time was short, immediately flush the wound with normal saline. If mercury iodide has not been significantly absorbed through the skin, it generally will not cause serious harm.

3. Seek medical treatment

If these substances have been used for an extended period, they may cause some damage to the skin. It is advisable to go to the hospital immediately. The iodophor should be thoroughly removed with alcohol, followed by proper disinfection and dressing of the wound.

Medications should always be used under a doctor's guidance. Keep the wound clean and dry to prevent infection. In terms of diet, maintain a light and balanced intake and avoid spicy or irritating foods.
