How often should artificial ossicles be replaced?
Artificial ossicles are designed as lifelong permanent implants under normal circumstances and typically do not require replacement.
The primary materials used in artificial ossicles are usually inert substances such as polyethylene or titanium alloy. These materials are resistant to damage and absorption by the body once implanted in the middle ear, and generally do not need to be replaced if undamaged.
Although the materials used in artificial ossicles are highly stable, if the position of the implanted prosthesis shifts during the postoperative period, prompt medical evaluation and possible replacement are recommended. Otherwise, sound conduction efficiency may decrease, negatively affecting hearing and potentially causing symptoms such as hearing loss and tinnitus. Additionally, patients should avoid strenuous physical activity early after implantation to prevent dislodgement.
