Incubation period of influenza
Influenza usually refers to the common flu. The incubation period of influenza varies depending on the virus type, such as influenza A, influenza B, and influenza C viruses.
1. Influenza A Virus
The influenza A virus is highly contagious and prone to mutation. The incubation period may range from one to seven days. During this time, the virus may replicate in respiratory epithelial cells, a process that might not produce any clinical symptoms.
2. Influenza B Virus
Influenza B virus infections typically have a sudden onset, with an incubation period ranging from several hours to four days. Patients may experience abnormal symptoms such as muscle aches, chills, fever, and headache. Once these symptoms appear, individuals should immediately isolate at home and avoid going out to prevent spreading the infection to others.
3. Influenza C Virus
The incubation period for influenza C virus is usually 1 to 3 days. However, in individuals with low resistance, symptoms may develop within a few hours. The virus generally spreads through close-range respiratory droplets, leading to infection.
