After sleeping a night, there is a lot of yellow nasal mucus in the nose.
Having a large amount of yellow nasal discharge upon waking may be caused by physiological factors, or it could result from pathological conditions such as rhinitis or sinusitis. It is recommended to treat based on the underlying cause.
I. Physiological Factors
This may occur when the weather is dry and fluid intake is insufficient, leading to dehydration and dryness in the nasal passages. Symptoms generally improve with increased fluid intake and do not require special treatment.
II. Pathological Factors
1. Rhinitis
Rhinitis may be triggered by infections or allergies, causing an inflammatory response in the nasal cavity that irritates the nasal mucosa and increases secretions. Under a doctor's guidance, corticosteroid nasal sprays can be used for treatment. Common medications include budesonide nasal spray, mometasone furoate nasal spray, and fluticasone propionate nasal spray, which help reduce irritation to the nasal mucosa.
2. Sinusitis
Sinusitis may develop secondary to an upper respiratory infection, leading to congestion of the nasal mucosa and thickened secretions. Antibiotics prescribed by a doctor—such as amoxicillin capsules, metronidazole tablets, or ampicillin capsules—can help resolve the infection and promote inflammation reduction.
In addition, other conditions such as nasal polyps may also be responsible. It is advisable to promptly identify the underlying cause and undergo proper treatment.
