Is Poems syndrome also called blood cancer?
POEMS syndrome is not a type of blood cancer.
Blood cancer is a disease caused by genetic changes in hematopoietic cells due to various factors. POEMS syndrome is a multisystem disorder associated with plasma cell disorders, typically related to abnormal proliferation of plasma cells. Common clinical symptoms include polyneuropathy, autonomic nerve dysfunction, peripheral edema, and others. It is not a tumor resulting from genetic alterations in hematopoietic cells; therefore, POEMS syndrome does not belong to hematologic malignancies.
Leukemia, malignant lymphoma, and multiple myeloma are common types of blood cancers. With appropriate treatment, some of these conditions can be completely cured or even prevented. Otherwise, the progression of POEMS syndrome may cause damage to multiple systems, including peripheral neuropathy, hepatosplenomegaly, and endocrine disorders. Patients with POEMS syndrome should promptly take immunosuppressive agents under a doctor's guidance.
In daily life, patients should eat more foods rich in vitamins B and C, such as oats, black sesame seeds, and papaya, as well as other vitamin-rich foods, focusing mainly on light and nutritious meals.
