What causes a burning pain in the eyelids?
Eye pain with a burning sensation may be caused by physiological factors or pathological factors, such as contact dermatitis, herpes zoster, and others.
I. Physiological Factors
This may occur when the eyelid comes into contact with chili peppers, is bitten by insects, or when bacterial substances remain in the skin. It can also result from foreign bodies such as flying insects or sand entering the eye, causing friction and irritation to the eyelid.
II. Pathological Factors
1. Contact Dermatitis
This may result from rubbing the eyes with dirty hands, using substandard cosmetics, or exposure to irritating or toxic substances such as hydrochloric acid, formaldehyde, or pesticides, leading to skin damage at the site of contact.
2. Herpes Zoster
This may occur due to low immunity, infection with the varicella-zoster virus, use of immunosuppressants or large doses of glucocorticoids, or underlying conditions such as diabetes or lymphoma, which can lead to herpes zoster affecting the eyelid.
In addition, conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia may also cause this symptom. Patients are advised to seek timely medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause and follow medical guidance for treatment.
