How long does it take for a knee abrasion to heal?
Knee abrasions generally heal within 4 to 15 days, depending on the severity of the injury.
If the knee abrasion is mild and limited to the epidermis without bleeding, it typically heals in about 4 days. However, if the abrasion is more severe and the wound is deeper, healing may take up to 15 days. After a knee abrasion, walking should be minimized to avoid interfering with wound healing. Prompt wound care is important—use iodine tincture to disinfect the affected area, and properly bandage the wound to prevent infection and inflammation.
For severe knee abrasions, a tetanus shot may be necessary under a doctor's guidance. If poor healing occurs with signs of redness or swelling, topical application of antibiotics such as mupirocin ointment or erythromycin ointment—under medical supervision—can help kill bacteria, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.
In addition, avoid showering shortly after a knee abrasion to prevent water exposure and potential infection of the wound.
