How high is very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) considered dangerous?
Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels above 4.5 mmol/L are generally considered dangerous and may significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
VLDL can be converted into low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the plasma and plays a transport role by delivering cholesterol produced by the body to organs such as the liver, testes, and ovaries. The normal range for LDL is typically between 3.3 and 4.1 mmol/L. Levels exceeding 4.1 mmol/L indicate hyperlipidemia, which can irritate blood vessel walls, trigger inflammation, cause vessel blockages, lead to insufficient blood supply, and ultimately result in atherosclerosis. Elevated VLDL levels increase the risk of atherosclerosis; in severe cases, this may trigger coronary heart disease, causing symptoms such as palpitations, fatigue, and chest tightness. Under medical guidance, medications such as atorvastatin or rosuvastatin tablets can be used for treatment.
In addition, elevated VLDL levels may result from prolonged consumption of high-fat and oily foods. Patients should promptly visit a hospital for relevant examinations and, under medical supervision, may take antiplatelet aggregation drugs for treatment.
