Is a mean platelet volume of 12.3 normal?
An average platelet volume of 12.3 refers to a mean platelet volume (MPV) of 12.3 fL, which is abnormal and elevated.
The platelet system test in a routine blood count is performed using automated blood cell analysis to determine the average platelet volume. This value represents the average volume of individual platelets and can indirectly reflect bone marrow hematopoietic function. The normal reference range is between 7 fL and 11 fL. Therefore, an MPV of 12.3 fL is considered high.
Patients with elevated mean platelet volume may experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, excessive sweating, and general weakness. They might also develop fever, gum bleeding, heavy menstrual bleeding, vomiting blood, or black stools. If not treated promptly, complications such as widespread skin petechiae, nosebleeds, and even life-threatening conditions may occur. Mild cases can be improved and regulated through dietary adjustments. It is recommended to consume more high-protein foods such as milk, lean meat, pears, and black fungus. If symptoms do not improve, medications such as dexamethasone tablets or hydrocortisone tablets may be taken under medical supervision.
Patients should maintain good oral hygiene, avoid skin injuries, establish healthy bowel habits, drink plenty of water, get adequate rest and sleep, quit smoking and alcohol consumption, and avoid strenuous exercise.
