Is cefixime effective for viral cold?
Generally, taking cefixime is ineffective for viral colds.
A viral cold usually refers to a respiratory illness caused by pathogens such as respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, or parainfluenza virus. Cefixime belongs to the third-generation cephalosporins and is an antibiotic primarily used to inhibit bacteria such as Gram-negative and some Gram-positive organisms. It does not have any antiviral effect and generally cannot alleviate symptoms of a viral cold, such as fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, or other discomforts. Taking antibiotics blindly may delay proper treatment and lead to various adverse drug reactions.
In general, antiviral medications—such as oseltamivir phosphate granules, ribavirin granules, or zanamivir inhalation powder—can be used under a doctor's guidance to suppress the virus and relieve symptoms.
