Introduction
Eyes being unable to open and tearing in sunlight may be due to the eyes' temporary inability to adapt to intense external light, which usually does not require treatment. If caused by allergic conjunctivitis, medications such as sodium cromoglicate eye drops or tobramycin-dexamethasone eye drops may be used as directed by a physician. If caused by keratitis, treatments may include acyclovir eye drops, ganciclovir eye drops, or surgical correction for conditions such as ectropion.

There are two main reasons why eyes may have difficulty opening and tear up in sunlight: non-disease factors and disease-related factors. Common medical conditions include allergic conjunctivitis and keratitis.

I. Non-disease Factors

This may occur after spending a long time in dimly lit environments or indoors, then suddenly moving into a brightly lit area or direct sunlight. The eyes temporarily cannot adapt to the intense light, triggering a protective reflex that causes tearing and difficulty opening the eyes. This usually does not require treatment.

II. Disease-related Factors

1. Allergic Conjunctivitis

Being exposed to allergens such as dust mites or pollen, or using substandard eye drops or cosmetics, may irritate the eyes and trigger allergic conjunctivitis. When suddenly exposed to bright sunlight, eye discomfort and tearing may result. Treatment may include medications such as sodium cromoglicate eye drops, tobramycin-dexamethasone eye drops, or olopatadine hydrochloride eye drops, used according to medical advice.

2. Keratitis

Keratitis may result from corneal injury, wearing contaminated contact lenses, or infection by pathogenic microorganisms such as chlamydia or mycobacteria. Inflammation irritates surrounding eye tissues, leading to swelling and congestion. Treatment may involve antiviral medications like acyclovir eye drops, ganciclovir eye drops, or acyclovir gel under a doctor's guidance, or surgical interventions such as trichiasis correction surgery or eyelid ectropion repair.

In addition, conditions such as dry eye syndrome may also be responsible. It is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation for accurate diagnosis.
