Will enlarged glands disappear as they grow older?
Whether enlarged adenoids can disappear with growth depends on whether the cause is physiological or pathological, such as upper respiratory tract infections or tonsillitis.
I. Physiological Causes
In healthy children, adenoids normally begin to gradually grow and enlarge around the age of 5–6 years, which is a normal physiological phenomenon. If no other significant pathological changes are present, they usually shrink progressively with age and may eventually atrophy and disappear.
II. Pathological Causes
1. Upper Respiratory Tract Infection
Due to children's relatively weak immune systems, viruses and bacteria entering the body may cause infections in the upper respiratory tract, leading to adenoid enlargement. Without active treatment, the enlargement typically does not resolve spontaneously as the child grows older.
2. Tonsillitis
Since adenoids are part of the tonsillar tissue, they will not regress on their own when inflamed due to infection. Medical intervention with medication is required.
Additionally, if enlargement is caused by allergies or similar factors, it generally does not resolve spontaneously either. It is usually necessary to promptly avoid allergens and receive anti-allergy treatment under medical guidance.
