What does bigeminal atrial premature beats mean?
Bigeminy due to atrial premature beats refers to a regular alternation between sinus rhythm and atrial premature beats. This condition is also categorized as frequent atrial premature beats.
The electrocardiogram (ECG) shows that after one normal ECG waveform, a premature P wave appears earlier than expected. This P wave differs from the sinus P wave, with a PR interval exceeding 0.12 seconds. The QRS complex exhibits supraventricular morphology or is non-QRS in nature, followed by a return to a normal ECG waveform, then another atrial premature beat waveform. Some patients may be asymptomatic, while others may experience symptoms such as fatigue, palpitations, chest tightness, or a sensation of skipped heartbeats.
If bigeminal atrial premature beats result from prolonged fasting or overeating, it is considered a physiological condition. By improving lifestyle habits, the condition will gradually resolve. For patients with coronary heart disease, medications such as enteric-coated aspirin tablets or atorvastatin calcium tablets may be taken under a physician's guidance. A light diet should be maintained in daily life, with reduced intake of greasy foods.
If drug therapy proves ineffective for atrial premature beat bigeminy, radiofrequency ablation of the atrium may be considered. Specific treatment plans should follow medical advice.
