How to successfully pass an NT scan
Under normal circumstances, for a successful NT scan, pregnant women need to maintain an appropriate body position, choose the right timing, fully cooperate with the doctor's procedures, engage in moderate physical activity, and moderately hold urine. The details are as follows:
1. Maintain an appropriate body position
An NT scan measures the thickness of the fetal nuchal translucency via ultrasound to assess potential chromosomal abnormalities. To perform the scan effectively, the fetus should ideally be in a lateral or sagittal position. If the fetus is lying face down or in a seated position, it is recommended that the pregnant woman gently massage her abdomen or walk around slightly to encourage the fetus to shift into the optimal position for examination.
2. Choose the appropriate timing
The NT scan should be performed between 11 and 13 weeks of gestation. Conducting the scan too early or too late may reduce its accuracy and lead to incorrect results.
3. Fully cooperate with the doctor's procedures
Pregnant women should maintain normal eating habits during the NT scan. Additionally, maternal anxiety may affect the fetus' state and hinder the smooth progress of the examination. It is advisable to remain relaxed, follow medical instructions, and possibly drink sugared water to help calm both mother and fetus.
4. Engage in moderate physical activity
Moderate movement before or during the scan can stimulate fetal activity within the uterus, increasing fetal mobility and facilitating clearer imaging and easier assessment.
5. Moderately hold urine
Pregnant women may moderately retain urine to keep the bladder full, which helps improve visualization of the uterus and leads to more accurate scan results.
If the NT scan indicates a risk of fetal abnormalities, further diagnostic testing is recommended as soon as possible to prevent potential adverse outcomes.
